Falling vs placing
In Tetris a piece drops from the top and you steer it on the way down. Hesitate and it lands where it lands. In Block Blast nothing moves. You pick up a piece, put it anywhere there is room, and the board waits for you.
This is the difference everything else comes from. Tetris tests how quickly you see the right spot. Block Blast tests whether you can see it at all.
Rows and columns
Tetris clears horizontal rows only. Block Blast clears columns too, which opens up a move Tetris does not have: a single piece that completes a row and a column at the same moment. Setting up those cross-clears is the heart of scoring high in Block Blast.
Rotation
Tetris lets you spin a piece to make it fit. Classic Block Blast does not. An L-piece dealt pointing left stays pointing left. That one restriction is why the game gets hard: you have to leave space for the shape you are given, not the one you would like.
How each game ends
A Tetris game ends when the stack reaches the top of the well, usually because the pieces are falling faster than you can think. A Block Blast game ends when a piece will not fit anywhere. It is never the clock that beats you, only the board you built.
Which should you play?
Choose Tetris if you like speed, pressure and the feeling of barely keeping up. Choose Block Blast if you want to think, take a break mid-game, or play one-handed on a phone without stress.
Plenty of people enjoy both. If Tetris is the one you know, the fastest way to feel the difference is to play Block Blast online. The rules take a minute; our guide on how to play Block Blast covers them.
Want to feel the falling-piece side again? Falling Blocks Puzzle is the classic recipe, and SandTrix turns every landed piece into sand. Both sit with the other block games on this site.
